Polyphonic Ringtones
Polyphonic ringtones are a major improvement on
these old-style ringtones. Created from a MIDI file, polyphonic
ringtones use a little synthesizer chip inside the mobile phone to
achieve the various instrument sounds such as drums, guitar,
keyboards, bass, and so forth on multiple tracks. The chip
approximates the sounds of these instruments, resulting in a
semi-realistic version of a song.
Unfortunately, polyphonic ringtones are still unable to play an
accurate and convincing reproduction of the original music.
Nevertheless, 80% of mobile phones currently use MIDI-created
polyphonic ringtones.
The Future of Ringtones
Needless to say, the quality of ringtones is continuously improving
and evolving in cell phone audio technology. The latest incarnation
are real music ringtones, capable of playing the actual music,
including the vocals and accompaniment. Most older cell phones are
unable to play real music ringtones, while newer more expensive cell
phones can handle real music ringtones or MP3s.
